Welcome to the Breeders Corner. Each month we offer an editorial perspective on the Shiba Inu, dog breeding, or just on life with dogs in general.

STARTLING FACT: Did you know that pet food manufacturers can ( and do, as raw materials prices fluctuate) change the ingredients in a dog food, for up to six months without having to change the labeling? All dogs can benefit from superior nutrition. Research tells us that proper nutrition aids disease-resistance, cancer defence, healthy coat and skin condition, and longevity.

Using a species appropriate diet you will be on your way to helping your dog maintain optimum health through better nutrition.

Dry Food- Dry food is 6 to 10 percent moisture(water) and contains a high percentage of carbohydrates(grains) so it can bake into a hard kibble.

Pros: Economical, because grains are low cost ingredients compared to meats, so dry food costs less.

:Convenient to buy, store and serve

:Provides some abrasion during chewing, aiding the removal of dental plaque, but doesn't eliminate need for regular dental care.

Cons:Grains aren't elements of natural canine cuisine, and are harder to digest.

:Contains preservatives, which are needed to prevent spoilage.

:The heat used to bake kibble destroys some nutrients.

:Contaminants present a potential danger. We know baking and frying our own foods at high temps generates the potent carcinogen(cancer-causing agent) called acrylamide. This has not been tested in pet foods, YET.
